What is a Package Manager

A package manager or package management system is a collection of software tools that automates the process of installing, upgrading, configuring, and removing computer programs for a computer's operating system in a consistent manner.


Tools can be used to automatically install packages from online repositories:

Install Local Package

Alternatively we can download the package and install, e.g. install .deb package in Ubuntu:

$ dpkg -i filename.deb

Check all installed packages

$ dpkg --get-selections
$ dpkg --get-selections | grep mongo

UBUNTU ONLY: install software package

$ sudo tasksel --section server
