Decoding Intel CPU names

The standard naming scheme for modern Intel CPUs (Core, Xeon) follows this pattern: Brand → Brand Modifier → Generation → SKU → Suffix

Example: Intel® Core™ i9-14 900 K

1. Brand: The Product Line

Brand Target Audience & Use Case
Core™ Mainstream Consumer: Desktops, laptops, all-in-one PCs. The most common brand.
Xeon® Professional/Enterprise: Workstations, servers, data centers. Designed for reliability, scalability, and features like ECC memory.
Pentium® / Celeron® Entry-Level/Budget: Low-cost desktops and laptops for basic tasks like web browsing and office apps.
Atom® Low-Power/Embedded: Mobile internet devices, IoT, network appliances where power efficiency is critical.

2. Brand Modifier (for Core™ Processors)

This indicates the general performance tier. Higher is better.

Modifier Performance Tier Typical Use Case
i9 Enthusiast / Extreme High-end gaming, professional content creation, maximum multitasking.
i7 High-End Serious gaming, streaming, demanding productivity, workstations.
i5 Mid-Range / "Sweet Spot" Mainstream gaming, general productivity, excellent all-around performance.
i3 Entry-Level Basic productivity, web browsing, media consumption, budget builds.

3. Generation Indicator

This is the most important number for determining how new a CPU is.

  • 10th Gen and newer: The first two digits of the SKU (e.g., 14900K is 14th Gen, 12600K is 12th Gen).
  • 9th Gen and older: The first single digit of the SKU (e.g., 9900K is 9th Gen, 7700K is 7th Gen).

4. SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

These three digits (e.g., 14900) rank the processor's performance within its generation and brand modifier. A higher number generally means more cores, higher clock speeds, or more cache.

  • An i7-14700K is better than an i5-14600K.
  • An i9-14900K is better than an i9-14900F.

5. Suffixes: The Key to a CPU's Specialization

This is the most critical part of the name. A single letter can completely change the CPU's intended use and features.

Desktop CPU Suffixes (Mainly Core™ Series)

Suffix Meaning Key Feature
K Unlocked The CPU's multiplier is unlocked, allowing for overclocking. Standard for enthusiast builds.
F Requires Discrete Graphics The CPU has no integrated graphics (iGPU). You must pair it with a dedicated graphics card.
KF Unlocked & Requires Discrete Graphics A combination of the two above. It's an overclockable chip with no integrated graphics.
(none) Standard / Locked A standard desktop chip with integrated graphics and a locked multiplier (cannot be overclocked).
S Special Edition A limited, higher-performance version of a K-series chip (e.g., i9-13900KS).
T Power Optimized Lower base clock speed and lower TDP (Thermal Design Power) for small form factor or all-in-one PCs.
E Embedded Designed for embedded systems (e.g., industrial PCs, digital signage).

Mobile CPU Suffixes (Laptops & Portables)

Suffix Meaning Target Device & Use Case
H High Performance Graphics Powerful CPUs for gaming laptops and mobile workstations. Higher power consumption.
HK High Performance, Unlocked The "best of the best" for laptops. High performance and overclockable.
HX Enthusiast-Grade High Performance The highest tier of mobile performance, often with more cores, for desktop-replacement laptops.
P Performance-thin A blend between power and efficiency. For thin-and-light laptops that still need good performance (28W TDP range).
U Ultra-low Power Designed for maximum battery life and efficiency. Found in mainstream thin-and-light ultrabooks (15W TDP range).
G + Number Graphics Level (Older) Used from 10th-12th Gen. A G7 or G4 indicated the power level of the integrated graphics (e.g., i7-1165G7). Now largely replaced by U/P/H series.

Xeon® Suffixes (Workstations & Servers)

This is a much more complex system, but here are some common ones:

Suffix Meaning
W Workstation (e.g., Xeon W-2400 series)
E Embedded / Entry
P Performance
V Volume (mainstream server parts)
+ (Plus) Higher core counts or performance

Putting It All Together: Examples

  • i9-14900KF: Core i9, 14th Gen, top-tier 900 SKU. It's Unlocked (K) for overclocking but Requires a dedicated GPU (F). This is for a top-end gaming/workstation PC with a powerful graphics card.

  • i5-13600: Core i5, 13th Gen, mid-range 600 SKU. No suffix means it's a standard, locked chip with integrated graphics. A great all-around desktop CPU.

  • i7-13700H: Core i7, 13th Gen, high-end 700 SKU. The H means it's a high-performance mobile chip for a powerful gaming or creative laptop.

  • i5-1240P: Core i5, 12th Gen, 40 SKU. The P means it's a performance-thin mobile chip, balancing power and efficiency for a capable, lightweight laptop.
